Siddha Regional Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram finds an important place in the history of Siddha. It was here that the legendary Siddhar Akattiyar attained Cam¡ti. The Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala state and the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu were earlier constituents of Travancore state, which is the only place where the Varmam therapy is still largely practiced in its original form.

During the year 1986, a Clinical Research Unit (Siddha) was established by the then Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS) in a rented building in the Poojapura area of Thiruvananthapuram and functioned there till 2002. Subsequently the unit was merged with Regional Research Institute (Drug Research), Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram.

During the period from December 2005 to May 2009, the Clinical Research Unit (Siddha) was shifted to the campus of Santhigiri Siddha Medical College and Hospital (a private institution) near Pothencode, Thiruvananthapuram and functioned there, while the Regional Research Institute (Drug Research), Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram was retained in the same location at Poojapura. On May 15th 2009 the Clinical Research Unit (Siddha) was again shifted and merged with Regional Research Institute (Drug Research), Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram. The Siddha Regional Research Institute was established in November 2010, by the merging of the Clinical Research Unit (Siddha) with the Chemistry Section of Regional Research Institute (Drug Research) and the erstwhile Regional Research Institute (Drug Research) was renamed as Ayurveda Research Institute for Mother and Child Health Care (ARIMCHC). Till July 2014 the SRRI, Thiruvanathapuram, with its departments of Clinical research and Chemistry was functioning along with ARIMCHC in the rent-free building provided by the state Government at Poojappura. On 1st August 2014, the institute was shifted to the newly constructed building and since then it has been functioning there along with Ayurveda Research Institute for Mother and Child Health Care (ARIMCHC) which has recently been renamed as Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Lifestyle Disorders (RARILD).

Clinical research activities: Bone fracture, Joint dislocation and general clinical conditions are being treated by this Institute. Geriatric cases are also treated in the outpatient department. A new outpatient department for Varmam therapy has been started in SRRI, Thiruvananthapuram and patients suffering from various ailments are being treated by Varmam therapy.
